Limbic system in Alzheimer's disease, 3D MRI scan
Coloured 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the limbic system of the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of brain mass. Here, there is atrophy (shrinking) of the left hippocampus (bottom centre, multicoloured) and asymmetrical dilation of the temporal horns (green).
