Pollen grain and fungi, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fir pollen grain surrounded by fungal hyphae on a piece of coarse woody debris. Fungal hyphae have already grown on the pollen grain itself. In humid weather a small pollen grain that falls on a forest floor disappears after a few days. It is quickly processed to humus by fungi and bacteria. Specimen from the Northern Black forest, Germany. Magnification: x400 when printed at 15cm wide., by EYE OF SCIENCE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
