Plant root with ectomycorrhiza, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture preparation of a Spruce root with ectomycorrhiza. A mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a soil fungus (grey) and the roots of a plant. Both organisms benefit from this association. Ectomycorrhiza grow between the cells of the root cortex, but do not penetrate its tissues. Within the plant cells are phenol droplets (yellow).
