Site of Katyn Forest Massacre, aerial photography
Aerial photograph of Katyn Forest, near Smolensk, Russia, the site of a massacre of Polish military officers, police and intelligentsia by the Soviet Union in April and May 1940. Mass graves of approximately 22,000 men were found in the area by occupying German troops in April 1943. The USSR denied responsibility for the massacre, blaming Nazi Germany, until 1990.
