General view, 1964 : Tokyo Olympics. Opening ceremony. On October 10, 1964, the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games was held at the National Stadium in Tokyo under a "sunny Olympics" sky, with about 5,500 athletes from 94 countries marching proudly in front of 75,000 spectators. Ginza, Chuo-ku, near the athletes' village, was crowded with non-athletes and foreign tourists visiting the Olympics during the Games. A policewoman answers questions from a foreigner at Ginza 5-chome police box.
