Billy Mills (USA), OCTOBER 14, 1964 - Athletics : Tokyo Olympics. The Tokyo Olympics began on October 10, 1964, and on October 14, the final of the men's 10,000 meters, the "flower of track and field," was held at the National Stadium. The winner of the fierce competition was a completely unknown American, Williams Mills (number 722). The American GI, who has never competed before, said, "I was looking for an opportunity to make a last spurt. I thought I had won for the first time in the last 20 meters," he said with joy.
