Milky Way over Alqueva, Portugal
Milky Way captured over Noudar Nature Park, Alqueva, Portugal, at the end of summer. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. As summer ends, the Summer Milky Way gradually disappears into the western horizon (right). At the same time in the eastern sky (left), the Winter Milky Way begins to appear and the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, star cluster rises above the horizon (above white building). Jupiter is the bright object at lower centre. The Andromeda Galaxy is the diffuse oval to the upper left of Jupiter. At top centre right is Vega, one of the stars of the Summer Triangle., by MIGUEL CLARO/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
