Periodontal ligament, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture through the periodontal ligament around the root of a tooth. Cementum (grey) covers the root of the tooth. The periodontal ligament is made up of collagen fibre (brown) bundles known as Sharpey's fibres. These fibres anchor the root of the tooth to the jawbone. Fibroblasts (yellow), cells that produce collagen, are seen embedded in the fibres. The picture was created as part of a cooperation with Quintessenz Publishing. Magnification: x15,000 when printed at 15cm wide., by EYE OF SCIENCE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
