General view, OCTOBER 10, 1964 - Opening Ceremony : The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games (1964) -- The torch heading for the National Stadium on the day of the Opening Ceremony, the last day of the torch relay 1964 (Showa 39) On October 10, the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo began. On the same day, the Opening Ceremony was held at the National Stadium in Tokyo, and 5,500 athletes from 94 countries marched into the stadium in front of 73,000 spectators. Emperor Showa proclaimed the opening of the Games, and Yoshinori Sakai, the final runner of the torch relay, entered and lit the torch. On the day of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, the final day of the torch relay, the torch heads for the National Stadium near the Akasaka-mitsuke intersection (behind) in the fourth section. The torch was handed to the final runner, Yoshinori Sakai, who relayed seven sections from in front of the Imperial Palace to wait in front of the National Stadium.
