On the same day, the Opening Ceremony was held at the National Stadium in Tokyo, and 5,500 athletes from 94 countries marched into the stadium in front of 73,000 spectators. The Emperor Showa declared the opening of the Games, and Yoshinori Sakai, the final runner of the torch relay, entered and lit the torch.
