Stent in aortic aneurysm, CT scan
Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram scan of the abdomen of a 75 year old male patient who has had an aortic aneurysm repaired with a stent (metal mesh, white). The aorta is the body's main artery. An aneurysm is a dilation of the artery wall, and can be fatal if it ruptures. A stent has been implanted in the abdominal region of the aorta above and at the bifurcation of the aorta into the iliac arteries. The patient has also had a femero-femoral bypass (horizontal across bottom), where blood flow is redirected through an artificial blood vessel (graft) to avoid a blockage., by ZEPHYR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
