Damaged school building of the former Ono-Kiba Elementary School Minamishimabara-shi, Nagasaki
Date photographed: May 31, 2022
The elementary school, along with 153 nearby houses, was completely destroyed by a large pyroclastic flow from Mt. Fugendake that occurred at 18:54 on September 15, 1991. The school is preserved as one of the pyroclastic flow remains and an erosion control learning center. The ginkgo tree on the school grounds also burned down along with the school building, but it sprouted the following year.
