Nerve ganglion cells, light micrograph
Light micrograph of the bodies of cells in a nerve ganglion. The cell bodies have round nuclei (purple ovals) with prominent nucleoli (dark pink to purple dots inside purple circles) and abundant cytoplasm (light pink areas around nuclei). The cytoplasm contains Nissl granules (very small pink grains) and scattered lipochrome pigment (light brown grains). Ganglion cells are found at various locations throughout the body and function in the autonomic nervous system, or the system of nerves that operate independently of voluntary control. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10 cm., by ZIAD M. EL-ZAATARI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
