Anthracotic pigment, light micrograph
Light micrograph of anthracotic pigment (black dots) accumulated in one of the draining lymph nodes of the lungs. The pigment is picked up by macrophage cells (pink and purple) that transport it through lymphatic channels to draining lymph nodes. Anthracotic pigment can accumulate in smokers or in urban residents who inhale dust and other substances from the air. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section.
