Gegenschein over Mount Gongga, Sichuan, China
Gegenschein over Mount Gongga in Sichuan, China. Gegenschein (white, upper centre) is a faint elliptical glow that appears exactly opposite to the Sun in the night sky. It is caused by the backscattering of sunlight by interplanetary dust particles. Yellow (lower right) and green (lower left) airglow also appear. This occurs in Earth's atmosphere as sunlight interacts with atoms and molecules within it. Photographed on 28 October 2019., by JEFF DAI / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
