Iceland
Lava flows overlooking the homes of the town on Heimaey Island, part of the Westman Islands, an archipelago of some 15 islands on the South Coast of Iceland, formed some 11,000 years ago. The island's volcano, Eldfell, exploded on January 23, 1973. The island's entire population evacuated overnight, except for 300 people who stayed behind to fight the lava flow with water hoses; Heimaey Town, Heimaey Island, Iceland, by Karen Kasmauski / Design Pics
