Fish louse. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of a fish louse (Argulus sp.) This freshwater crustacean is usually found on a variety of fish. The head has two reduced antennae.Two suckers are modification of the maxillae. Below these are arm-like mouthparts. The louse attaches itself to a fish's gill covering and feeds on mucus, scales and blood. It can cause the severe disease state argulosis in a wide variety of fish species. It is responsible for epizootic (disease event in a nonhuman animal) outbreaks that have led to the collapse of aquaculture operations.
