Illustration of a pelican eel (Eurypharynx pelecanoides) opening its mouth. This deep-sea fish is found at depths of between 500 to 3000 metres. It grows up to one metre in length. It is able to expand its mouth and hinge its jaw to accommodate prey that are larger than the pelican eel itself.
