Phytoplankton bloom, satellite image
Satellite image of a phytoplankton bloom in the North Sea. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the basis of nearly all ocean food chains. Such blooms occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fuelling the growth and reproduction of the phytoplankton. The grid of dots at right is a wind farm. Image obtained by the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9 on 14th June 2023., by NASA Earth Observatory/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
