Peculiar galaxy NGC 3256, HST image
Peculiar galaxy NGC 3256, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This galaxy is located 100 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Vela. NGC 3256 is the result of a past galactic merger, which has created its distorted appearance. This makes it a good site for researching starbursts caused by a much higher rate of star formation than usual. This optical image was obtained with the HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3)., by ESA/Hubble, NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
