Percutaneous breast biopsy, MRI scan
Coloured 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showing a percutaneous (via the skin) breast biopsy, which is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a tumour (orange/red) sample for further analysis. The cancerous area is first located using an MRI scan with gadolinium staining, and then a needle (blue, top) is inserted to retrieve a sample. Breast cancer is the uncontrolled growth of irregular breast cells. Breast cancer can present as a breast lump or thickening (often painless), a change in the size or shape of the breast, changes in the appearance of the nipple or areola, or an abnormal fluid discharge from the nipple.
