La Paz is the de facto capital of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. The Salar de Uyuni is located in the town of Uyuni on the Altiplano plateau in the southwestern part of the country. It is 3,663 meters above sea level and 11,000 square kilometers in area, with a difference in elevation of only 50 centimeters. It is therefore the flattest place in the world. When the Andes Mountains rose, a large amount of seawater was left on top of the mountains, and because of the dry climate and the fact that the Salar de Uyuni has no rivers to flow out, the salt from the seawater also collects in the Salar de Uyuni, causing it to dry up. When the rainy season arrives, the salt flats sink below the surface of the water, and if there is no wind, the salt flats are famous for their mirrorlike appearance. It is also estimated that the Salar de Uyuni contains approximately 17 of the worlds lithium reserves. The photo shows lightning striking the area due to stormy weather. The wind was so strong that it blew away the camera and tripod, and the chartered driver was taking pictures with his own camera, saying that this was the first bad weather he had ever experienced in his life.
