Hime Hotaru (firefly) at Hasukeyama, Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture
Fireflies are divided into two main groups based on their habitat: the Genji and Heike fireflies, which are aquatic fireflies, and the Himehotaru, which live in bamboo and mountain forests as land-dwelling fireflies. These photos follow the flight of the terrestrial fireflies in Kochi Prefecture, which from early May to late June move from lowlands to higher elevations, roaming the satoyama and forests at night.
The photo was taken in Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture, at a shrine by the Hakeyama mountain trail, and at a deserted hall and shrine in the satoyama, which served as a stage for the hime-hotaru.
