Lead and silver ore from ancient mines
Argentiferous (silver-containing) galena (lead II sulfide) ore, from the ancient La Union mines, Cartagena, Spain. Argentiferous galena is an ore from which lead and silver can be extracted. This is what it looks like following a heating process to separate the lead and silver. It has been mined from La Union for over 2,000 years. The mines here were first used by the Carthaginians, and later by the Roman Empire., by MARCO ANSALONI / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
