Jupiter and faint aurora in night sky, December 2023
December night sky with winter constellations, Jupiter (right) with faint aurora borealis (northern lights, red hue). Aurora are caused by energetic charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. The charged particles in solar wind are drawn by Earth's magnetic field to the poles, where they collide with gas atoms and molecules, causing them to emit light.
