Human oesophagus muscular layer, light micrograph
Light micrograph of the muscular layer of the esophagus. This layer is unique in having a mixture of smooth muscle fibres and striated muscle fibres in its middle third. Seen here are two layers of the muscular layer with a mixture of smooth and striated muscle fibres that are stained bright red.
