Brown and white fat, light micrograph
Light micrograph showing interscapular brown adipose (fat) tissue. Brown fat is very developed in rodents and hibernating animals. Brown adipocytes show a spongy eosinophilic aspect because they store fat as small lipid droplets. Brown and white adipose tissue are often mixed and, with time, there is a gradual transformation of brown into white fat., by JOSE CALVO / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
