Sample deposits on Mars, Perseverance rover image
Composite image of sample tubes collected by the Perseverance Mars Rover on the surface of Mars. These tubes are samples of Martian rock left as backups should the delivery of the main samples fail. Ten tubes are contained in the image, with the closest visible to the left. These tubes each have equivalents which are planned to be returned to Earth for analysis in the 2030s. These samples have been left here should any part of this sample return fail. Image captured by the Curiosity Mars Rover's Mastcam-Z camera on 31 January 2023., by NASA, JPL-Caltech, ASU, MSSS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
