Mitochondria, confocal light micrograph
Confocal light micrographs of mitochondria (red) in a cell extracted from the African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). They are stained using a special dye that only fluoresces in the membranes of the mitochondria. They are distributed around the nucleus (stained blue with DAPI). Mitochondria are organelles that produce energy for a cell. The cytoskeleton, which maintains the cell's shape, allows some cellular mobility and is involved in intracellular transport, is stained white.
