Solar flare, SDO ultraviolet image
Extreme ultraviolet (UV) image showing an X2.2 category solar flare (upper left) erupting from Active Region 13229 on the surface of the Sun. A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. The radiation from this large flare caused radio blackouts for around an hour over parts of the Americas. Imaged at a wavelength of 171 angstroms by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), on the 17th of February 2023., by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
