Eruption of solar material, SDO image
Eruption of solar material launched from an active region (left) of the Sun classed as an M1 solar flare. This phenomenon occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Within just a few minutes, the material is heated to many millions of degrees and produces a burst of radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. Imaged obtained at a wavelength of 304 angstroms by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)., by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
