The world's first 300-megawatt compressed air energy storage station is now up and running in Yingcheng, in central China's Hubei Province. The station operates by pumping air into underground salt caverns during off-peak hours and then releasing the compressed air to generate power during peak demand. Dubbed a "super power-bank", the station is projected to generate 500 million kilowatt-hours of power annually. Its single-machine capacity can reach 300 MWH, the energy storage capacity can reach 1500 MWH, and the conversion efficiency is close to 70 percent. The amount of electricity stored at a time can meet the needs of a small or medium-sized city for five-hour continuous electricity consumption."
