The Statue of Peace in Gwangju, South Korea
The Statue of Peace, Apr 20, 2024 : The Statue of Peace is seen in the Gwangju Nam-gu (South district) in the city of Gwangju in South Jeolla Province, about 330 km (205 miles) south of Seoul, South Korea. The Statue of Peace, aka 'Comfort Women Statue' symbolizes the Korean victims of the Japanese military's sexual slavery during the World War II. According to local media, historians say up to 200,000 women, mostly Koreans, were forced into sexual slavery in front-line Japanese brothels during the war when the Korean Peninsula was a Japanese colony. The sex slaves were so-called comfort women. (Photo by Lee Jae-Won/AFLO)
