Sperm cell production, illustration
Illustration of primary (top) and secondary (bottom left and right) spermatocytes within a seminiferous tubule in a testis (testicle). These cells divide and differentiate to produce sperm cells (spermatogenesis). The primary spermatocyte has divided by meiosis to produce the two secondary spermatocytes. Spermatocytes further divide via meiosis to form spermatids, which in turn mature into spermatozoa, commonly known as sperm. Spermatozoa are the mobile male gametes (reproductive cells), which can fertilise the egg during sexual reproduction, and carry one set of chromosomes from one parent., by DESIGN CELLS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
