AIDS patient
(Date of photograph unknown)
Photograph of a person suffering from AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), showing marked emaciation accompanied by extensive seborrhoeic dermatitis - the darker patches on the skin. Weight loss due to muscle wastage is evident in some persons with AIDS. Seborrhoeic dermatitis occurs throughout the general population and is therefore not indicative of infection with the AIDS virus (HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus). However, the appearance of extensive seborrhoeic dermatitis in a seropositive patient (HIV antibody positive) may be taken as a clinical indication of the development of full-blown AIDS.
