Sputnik 2 (model)
(1972)
Sputnik 2, Soviet spacecraft. This was the second spacecraft to orbit the Earth, doing so on 3 November 1957. This cone-shaped spacecraft was 4 metres high and 2 metres across at the base. It was this spacecraft that carried the dog Laika into space, with the dog dying a few hours after launch. The spacecraft burnt up on re-entry on 14 April 1958, after 162 days in orbit. This is an exhibition model, photographed in Russia in 1972.
