Located in eastern Switzerland s St. Gallen city, the Convent of St. Gall was one of the most important convents in Europe from the 8th century to its secularization in 1805. The Convent of St Gall, with its splendid baroque cathedral and the Abbey Library, constitutes a unique historic ensemble and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Its library is one of the richest and oldest in the world and contains 170,000 works and some 2,100 original medieval handwritten manuscripts, including the earliestknown architectural plan drawn on parchment. The hall of the library and the cathedral, main features of this remarkable architectural complex, was built in Baroque style between 17581767, reflecting 12 centuries of continuous activity. In 612, the Irish monk Gallus erected his hermitage on this site. It was around 719 that the Aleman Otmar extended the original hermit s cell into an abbey, which flourished rapidly. By the 9th century, thanks to its schools and library, the Abbey of St. Gall subsequently became one of the leading cultural centers of the Western world. And then the Benedictine monastery enjoyed a second period of glory in the 17th and 18th centuries.
