Islamic State Japanese Hostage Crisis
Widespread calls for Mr. Goto's release
Nine year old Leila Okumura holds an "I am Kenji" sign at a vigil for the freedom of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto in front of the official Residence of the Japanese Prime Minister in Tokyo on January 28, 2015. Goto was taken hostage in Syria in October 2014 by Islamic State (ISIS). On January 27, IS gave the Japanese and Jordanian government 24 hours to exchange Goto him for Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, an attempted suicide bomber who participated in the 2005 Amman bombings.
