Alexander Prokhorov
(Date of filming unknown)
Aleksandr Prokhorov (1916-2002). Image of the Russian physicist Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov operating an experimental unit for studying quantum generators. Prokhorov is primarily known for his work with Nikolai Basov on developing masers, the microwaves produced by systems of energised (excited) atoms. Maser stands for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. He also applied this technique to amplify light (the laser). His work on masers and lasers earned him the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Basov and Townes. Photographed in Moscow.
