The first train of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, "Kagayaki 500," departs at the signal of Kanazawa Station Chief (right) and actress Tao Tsuchiya (second from right). The 228-km Hokuriku Shinkansen line between Nagano and Kanazawa opened for service on April 14. The train between Tokyo and Kanazawa (450.5 km) took about 1 hour and 20 minutes less than before, making it the fastest train to connect the two cities in 2 hours and 28 minutes. The distance between Tokyo and Toyama was also shortened by about 1 hour to 2 hours and 8 minutes. The Tokyo-Nagano line has been in operation since 1997, and this is the first time in 18 years that the line has been extended. At JR Kanazawa Station, March 14, 2015 (photo by Kyodo News)
