Explosive Eruption on Kuchinoerabu Island
Residents ordered to evacuate the island
Islanders evacuated from Kuchinoerabu Island by ferry with their belongings at Miyanoura Port in Yakushima Town, Kagoshima Prefecture, at 6:08 p.m. on May 29, 2015 (Tokyo Morning Post, page 38). An explosive eruption occurred at around 9:59 a.m. on the 29th, and 137 islanders evacuated to Yakushima Island, about 12 kilometers away, by boat or other means. At 10:20 a.m., the town issued an evacuation order for the entire island, and most residents temporarily evacuated to a shelter in Banyagamine in the northwestern part of the island. In the afternoon of the same day, a total of 137 people, including 118 islanders and 19 tourists, left the island by town ferries and Coast Guard patrol boats, and arrived on Yakushima by around 5:30 pm.
