Otto Meyerhoff (1927)
Otto Meyerhof (1884-1951), German biochemist. Meyerhof studied medicine at Heidelberg, initially specialising in psychiatry but later turning to biochemistry. He conducted experiments on metabolism in muscles showing how aerobic conditions led to the formation of lactic acid during work, and how it was removed at rest. In 1938 he moved to France, and in 1940 escaped to the USA. There he worked at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, until his death. He shared the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on lactic acid. Photographed in 1927.
