He conducted experiments on metabolism in muscles showing how aerobic conditions led to the formation of lactic acid during work, and how it was removed at rest. In 1938 he moved to France, and in 1940 escaped to the USA. There he worked at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, until his death.
