Woman holding elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis) drugs in her hand. Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms spread by blood-sucking insects. The worms block the lymphatic system causing fluid accumulation (oedema) and associated swelling of the lymph vessels. Repeated infections result in massive enlargement of the affected part of the body, which is commonly the limbs. The pills of diethylcarbamazine and ivermectin are part of a trial to discover the effectiveness of this drug combination at killing the worms. Photographed in Papua New Guinea.
