Japan-South Korea Agreement on Comfort Women Issue
Protest Demonstration at Comfort Women Statue
Peace Monument, Dec 29, 2015 : The Peace Monument symbolizing Korean Comfort Women or sex slaves during the Second World War, is seen in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea as a protester holds a sign. Local media reported that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe apologized to the Korean victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, Japan provided a 1 billion-yen (US$8.3 million) fund for the victims and South Korea will refrain from blaming Japan over the issue, under the deal announced on Monday between the two countries. South Korean critics say questions remain if Tokyo legally admitted its "responsibilities" over its wartime atrocities, according to local media. South Korea agreed to work on Japan's demand that the Peace Monument be removed from outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. (Photo by Lee Jae-Won/AFLO) (SOUTH KOREA)
