Nagasaki, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipyard & Machinery Works
Fire broke out on the large cruise ship "Aida Prima" (9:23 p.m., January 11, 2016, in Nagasaki City), which is under construction in the dock of the Koyagi-Machi shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. in Koyagi-cho, Nagasaki City, at around 8:35 p.m. on January 11. The fire broke out on the seventh floor of the ship, which was about 15 square meters in area. Smoke filled the surrounding area, and the fire was under control at around 9:40 pm. According to the Nagasaki Prefectural Police Oura Station and the city fire department, a security guard called 119 to report smoke inside the ship and that the sprinklers had been activated, and workers on the dock were evacuated. According to the company, this cruise ship was one of two cruise ships ordered in 2011 from the U.S. cruise giant Carnival Corporation, with a capacity of 3,250 passengers. The delivery date was postponed three times because the interior finish did not meet the required standard, and Mitsubishi incurred huge losses due to labor and other costs.
