Scarecrows Play a Role in Revitalizing a Village
Old post village in Arakawa, Chichibu City
May 4, 2016, Chichibu, Japan - Japanese version of Cabbage Patch Kids or life-size stuffed dolls greet visitors to Niegawa Juku, an old post station in the village of Arakawa, some 75 km northwest of Tokyo in the mountainous Chichibu area, on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. A group of some 20 female villagers, all in the 60s, creates the scarecrows with waste articles, some in the appearance of working farmers and others playing kids, to scare off vermin in one hand and draw tourists on the other to this village of some 120 inhabitants. The group is aiming to make as many as 100 of them. (Photo by Natsuki Sakai/AFLO) AYF -mis-
