First visit to the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims
(April 16, 1971)
Emperor Akihito and Empress Akihito paid floral tribute to the victims of the atomic bombing at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, at 6:33 a.m. on January 7, 1989, at the Fukiage Palace in the Imperial Palace. On April 16, 1971, Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visited the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and laid flowers to the victims of the atomic bombing, and the Emperor said, "My heart was aching even now. Behind Their Majesties is the Atomic Bomb Dome (photo by Taro Nakamura).
