Seoul Wednesday Demonstration
(June 22, 2016)
Peace Monument, Jun 22, 2016 : People attend the weekly anti-Japan protest next to the Peace Monument symbolizing Korean Comfort Women or sex slaves by Japanese military during the Second World War in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea. Korean characters on background read,"(South Korean President) Park Geun-Hye's regime abolish immediately the agreement reached to resolve the issue of Korean comfort women between South Korea and Japan, which is treachery to South Korea". The two countries reached a deal on December 28, 2015 in which Japan expressed an apology for its colonial-era atrocities and agreed to provide 1 billion yen (US$9.6 million) for a foundation to support the surviving comfort women. The deal aims to put an end to the comfort women issue once and for all, however South Korean civic groups and the victims blamed the government for striking a deal lacking Japan's acknowledgment of legal responsibility, according to local media.
