On the morning of December 27 (morning of December 28, Japan time), Prime Minister Abe and U.S. President Barack Obama visited Pearl Harbor on the U.S. island of Oahu, Hawaii, to pay their respects to the victims of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by the former Japanese military. This was the first time that the leaders of the United States and Japan visited Pearl Harbor together to pay their respects. At the Arizona Memorial Hall, which stands on the battleship Arizona, which was sunk in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the two leaders offered flowers to the wall with the names of the victims engraved on it and observed a moment of silence.
