Saigou Takamori Saigou Takamori Saigou 1827-1877 Birthplace: Kagoshima Prefecture General of the Army. He was the greatest contributor to the success of the Meiji Restoration. He was the person who made the greatest contribution to the Meiji Restoration. However, he fell out with Toshimichi Okubo over the theory of the conquest of Korea, and went into exile. Defeated in the Seinan War, Saigo holed up in Shiroyama and committed suicide on September 24 (1877). Date unknown. (Photo by Kingendai Photo Library/AFLO)
